David earned his law degree from the University of Chicago in 1968, while in college participating in civil rights activity including working in Mississippi in 1964 to bring the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party challenge to the regular Democrats at the 1964 Democratic convention.
He practiced law in Alaska, first for Alaska Legal Services and then in private practice. He assisted in passage of Alaska Native Land Claims Act by obtaining on April 1, 1970 an injunction ( as leader of a team ) stopping the building of the Alaska pipeline. David taught CLEs for the Alaska Bar on Alaska Native Land law.
