Instructor: Oliver Petraitis
Oliver Petraitis is a linguist from the mountains outside of Anchorage, Alaska. Traveling with his family as a child inspired his lifelong interest in language and culture. Oliver completed a dual bachelor’s degree at the University of Alaska Anchorage in English Literature and in Applied Foreign Languages (German & French). As an undergraduate, he taught adults at the local German immersion school, Anchorage’s Rainer Maria Rilke Schule. He wrote his BA thesis in language attitudes towards English filler words as a function of speaker gender. Upon graduating, Oliver moved to Münster, Germany on a Fulbright teaching stipend and taught ESL for several years at a local Gymnasium, as well as the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität, where he completed his Masters in Sociolinguistics. A songwriter and working musician, his MA thesis investigated the language politics of multilingual European songwriters, performing a comparative analysis of how songwriters from across Europe engage with their own languages as well as the foreign languages at their disposal, with specific focus on the role of the English language in global pop culture. Oliver relocated to Portland in 2019. He also teaches German for Portland's Sophie Scholl Schule, German American Society, and Berlitz, as well as French at Atlas Immersion Academy. He speaks English, German, French, Dutch, and elementary Spanish.
