Stephen is an established painter who has been using the Oregon landscape as a source of inspiration for decades.

Recently, Hayes has been exploring the embodied experience of landscape mediated through the technology of Google Earth. In 1980, Hayes received his MFA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is represented by the Elizabeth Leach Gallery in Portland. His work has been featured in national and international exhibitions, and can be found in numerous public and private collections including Oregon State University, the New York Public Library, the Portland Art Museum, Microsoft Corporation, and the University of Oregon. In 2011 Hayes was named a Hallie Ford Fellow by the Ford Family Foundation and in 2018 was awarded a Fellowship from the John S. Guggenheim Memorial Foundation of New York.
